The fight against climate change requires a comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of human activities. Environmental data and analytics play a crucial role in this effort by providing valuable insights into the planet's state and helping us track progress toward sustainability.

Environmental data refers to a wide range of information, including climate data, air and water quality data, and data on the health of ecosystems. This information is gathered from various sources, including satellites, ground-based monitoring systems, and citizen science programs.

Environmental analytics uses data and statistical methods to understand and solve environmental problems. This includes the analysis of large amounts of environmental data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships that can help us to understand the impacts of human activities on the environment.

Global Forest Watch and The Ocean Cleanup are two interesting examples of companies using environmental data and analytics. Global Forest Watch is an online platform that provides near real-time information on the state of the world's forests. Using satellite data and other sources, Global Forest Watch provides a comprehensive view of forest cover and changes, helping monitor and prevent deforestation.

Ocean Cleanup is an organization that uses environmental data and analytics to address the issue of ocean plastic pollution. The organization uses a combination of satellite imagery and computer modeling to track the movement of plastic in the ocean and identify the sources of the pollution. This information is used to develop effective strategies for cleaning up the sea and preventing further plastic pollution.

Two more examples of how environmental data and analytics are being used to tackle water pollution:

  • The Water Project: This organization uses data from water quality testing and remote sensing to monitor water quality and track the sources of water pollution in sub-Saharan Africa. By analyzing this data, the organization is able to identify areas in need of intervention and provide communities with clean and safe water sources.

  • The Clean Lakes Alliance: This Wisconsin-based non-profit uses water quality data and modeling to understand the sources of water pollution in Lake Mendota and other nearby lakes. The organization uses this information to develop and implement strategies to reduce pollution and improve water quality. This includes working with local businesses, governments, and individuals to reduce runoff and improve wastewater treatment.

These examples demonstrate the power of environmental data and analytics in addressing water pollution. By providing a comprehensive view of the state of our water resources and the sources of pollution, we can develop targeted solutions that have a real and lasting impact on the health of our planet.

Environmental data and analytics are essential tools in the fight against climate change. By providing valuable insights into the state of the planet, these tools help us to track progress towards sustainability and make informed decisions that promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
