Ocean acidification is when the pH levels in the ocean drop, making it more acidic, which is precisely what the name suggests. Ocean acidification can soon be a significant, irreversible environmental issue if measures aren't taken to combat its impacts of it.
Marine animals require a specific pH range to sustain themselves. If the pH drops, these animals will be severely harmed. For example, coral, shellfish, and plankton have shells and exoskeletons made up of calcium carbonate. As ocean acidity increases, calcium carbonate dissolves, so these animals will have difficulty building and maintaining their shells. Ocean activity will decrease as organisms are unable to survive in different conditions.
Humans will also suffer if ocean acidification increases. People rely on the ocean for fishing, tourism, and many industries. Ocean acidification will impact all aspects of life for people. Places that have economies built around fishing will suffer greatly.

So, what is causing ocean acidification? One of the leading causes of ocean acidification is the burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide into the air. Some of this carbon dioxide ends up in the ocean, where it reacts with the water to form carbonic acid. As more and more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, the levels of carbonic acid in the ocean also increase, leading to a drop in pH levels.
Ocean acidification is a significant problem, and some effects are already starting to show around the earth. We must prevent conditions in our waters from becoming too acidic. One of the main ways to address this issue is by reducing our carbon dioxide emissions. This can involve using renewable energy sources, reducing energy consumption, and using more energy-efficient products. This will lower our carbon dioxide emissions, which will, in turn, lower ocean acidification.
We can also take steps to protect and restore marine ecosystems, which can help to mitigate the impacts of acidification. This can involve conserving coral reefs, protecting mangroves, and planting seagrass beds.
